The history of the origin and career of the two Slav States, Poland and Russia, is interesting not merely because it contains a vast number of surprising scenes and marvellous pictures of life, not merely because it gives us a kaleidoscope as it were of the acts of men, but because these acts in all their variety fall into groups which may be referred each to its proper source and origin, and each group contains facts that concern the most serious problems of history and political development. The history of these two States should be studied as one, or rather as two parts of one history, if we are to discover and grasp the meaning of either part fully. When studied as a whole, this history gives us the life story of the greater portion of the Slav race placed between two hostile forces,--the Germans on the west, the Mongols and Tartars on the east. The advance of the Germans on the Slav tribes and later on Poland presents, perhaps, the best example in history of the methods of European civilization. The entire Baltic coast from Lubeck eastward was converted to Christianity by the Germans at the point of the sword. The duty of rescuing these people from the errors of paganism formed the moral pretext for conquering them and taking their lands. The warrior was accompanied by the missionary, followed by the political colonist. The people of the country deprived of their lands were reduced to slavery; and if any escaped this lot, they were men from the higher classes who joined the conqueror in the capacity of assistant oppressors. The work was long and doubtful. The Germans made many failures, for their management was often very bad. The Slavs west of the Oder were stubborn, and under good leadership might have been invincible; but the leadership did not come, and to the Germans at last came the Hohenzollerns.

yes, yes, yes. That's what this book is. It's YES. It's about 16th century Poland, which no doubt to some of you sounds super-boring. To me, however, being interested in history and partly Polish myself, I knew it was for me.But it's amazing, guys. Here are some other fitting adjective: fantastic; phenomenal; excellent; outstanding; stupendous; superb; magnificent; splendiferous; brilliant; fabulicious... I read a tenth of the way through this 1135 page book on the first day. I've cried already; I've laughed out loud; I've growled in frustration; I've gnashed my teeth in anger; and I've made my mom wonder what on earth could be going on in "that book."
And I'm only on page 200, y'all. I'm so excited to eat my way through the rest of it.
Jane Austen said, "But for my own part, if a book is well-written, I always find it too short." Now, I agree with almost nothing of Jane Austen's. In fact, if she hadn't said this, then I wouldn't agree with anything she said (That I've heard). I'm so glad this book is long enough to guarantee prolonged enjoyment. Yes, it's expensive, and thick. But it's FABTABULOUS. I already have three friends in mind that I shall force this book upon once I'm done with it.
Only thing is, it's all about civil war. Thus, there are mobs and rebels. Thus, there is violence and blood and horror and disgusting things that are all condemned and shamefully spoken about. Rape is also mentioned. Some people are impaled on stakes. There is one scene describing the torture the townspeople put Jews through. If reading this out loud, these scenes can be easily skipped. Personally, I believe (for older readers) these scenes are incredibly important; the point of the book. It shows just how ugly and terrifying and sanguinary and gut-wrenching war really is.
But I mean, seriously, who doesn't want to read a book by a guy with a name like Sienkiewicz? The hero's name is Skshetuski. The villain is Hmyelnitzki. These names are SO COOL, so if you can't find any other reason to read this book, read it for the names.
Have I made myself clear? I LOVE this book! At a party last Friday night, in front of everyone during dinner, I was suddenly reminded of the latest tragedy that occurred in Skshetuski's life, and burst into tears, dismaying and shocking everyone around me, especially the hostess. So, I guess that's a warning; don't read this book in front of other people if you don't want your emotions on display.
That's my review. Get the book. Read it. Love it. I'm with ya, man.

Samuel Byers was born in 1838 and served in an Iowa regiment during the Civil War. He saw very heavy fighting and served 16 months in a Confederate prison from which he is lucky to have survived. It took him 2 years to recover his health afterwards. While a prisoner he wrote the Civil War poem, "Sherman's March to the Sea", which was very popular in the North and sold over a million copies. Mr. Byers was an enthusiastic supporter of the North and has written extensively on the subject including the book, "Iowa in Wartime".
"With Fire and Sword" is his personal first hand account of the war and his time in a Confederate prison. It speaks of hardship, life & death, valor, patriotism, horror, and the emotions of living in the most bitter and divisive time in American history. Byers is at his best when describing scenes that he saw with his own eyes. This book is a full and wide ranging memoir, rich in details of camp, battlefield, and prison, with the added bonus of Byers's close hand observations of General Sherman during the Carolina campaign. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in this period of our nation's history.
Think Conan the Barbarian crossed with Gone With the Wind and Lord of the Rings. An amazing read!
I have read every Sienkiewicz novel that I've been lucky enough to find. His trilogy, however, will forever be my favorite read. So, the
Classics comic book intrigued me. It barely scratches the surface of the beauty of a Sienkiewicz novel, but, for me, it has sentimental value.
This book is not available in our library but a great book - glad to have it in my own library. Buyer beware - this is only half of the book/story. There are 2 volumes.
I can sort of understand the present situation in Eastern Europe based on the past behavior of the Poles,Cossacks, and Ukrainians in the 16th and 17th centuries. I cannot tell if the author overstates the case of bloodshed, but genocide was very through. There is also a film of the book sans the out and out killing.
Well shoot i thought i was getting the whole trilogy, and i probably should have looked at the page count before i got this. Its a giant book written in the late 1800s in a language foreign to me and then translated.. even a modern book like that is hard to read(looking at you umberto ecco) however the little bit of this i have had a chance to read since its shown up at my door last night has been fantastic. The opening description of the steppes is amazing, and i can see 17th century cossacks with thier shaved heads and top knots running from the arrows of angry Tartars! I really am looking forward to reading more, this was a fascinating period of history and one not well known to western audiences, when Sweden and Poland were super powers.
My review is specifically of the unnamed Knock-off press that reprinted this Classic Literature. While i'm glad that has made this classical literature available at an affordable price, the knock-off press should have been aware that the main character's name is spelled SKRZETUSKI not "SHKRETUSKI" as it appears repeatedly throughout the book. This book was originally published in 1884 and therefore has been in the public domain for sixty-three years. This is the first time I've ever seen a book that is nothing more than the text (with spelling mistakes), no publisher is noted, no page numbers, footnote numbers without footnotes and the main character's name spelled wrong throughout the publication. The text size is also very small, although at least there is enough space between paragraphs that you don't get lost on the page. I would have liked to be warned that this publication was from a knock-off press and was not a normal book. I would have bought it anyway, but not being told and seeing a book in this condition was a little shocking.
