A nice gift book, particularly for someone who is hospitalized, or for reading in snatches. I'd give it a 3.5 stars but Amazon doesn't allow half-stars. Some of the essays are quite funny, as Barb Miller used to be a stand-up comedian. Other essays, about Christianity and our relationship with God, made me think. I underlined this passage on page 3: "When we are ourselves, God loves it because we weren't programmed to be anybody else." Barb's personality sings through the pages. A person, discouraged by legalist theology, will feel encouraged after reading this gentle book. For instance, one of the essays is titled, "It's Good To Be Easily Hoped." It's a bit difficult to be totally unbiased as I'e met Barb and like her considerably. The book could use some tightening, by strengthening the POV throughout the text and focusing the chapters more by topic. There are some typos but they generally don't distract from the flow of the text. I took a star off for the need to tighten and for the last section, which was a series of short plays which weakened the flow of the text by losing Barb's strong voice. There are a few cartoon drawings which were particularly funny; I'd like to see them used more regularly in a future book. They were dropped in the second half.Product details

‘Think Outside the Box… of Chocolates’ is a delightful assortment of stories, poems, lyrics and plays that will make you laugh and cry, sprinkled lightly with great one liners throughout. It’s a book you will want to refer to it often so I recommend buying 2 because you’ll also want to share it with your friends.
Barb's book arrived in the mail yesterday. Took me three sittings First during a pause that refreshes, second in my easy chair and finally, today while out walking my dogs (one is my daughter's), out in the sunshine, sitting on a log. I really enjoyed it. Barb has a very comfortable way with words and expresses her moral values and relationship with God without being at all preachy. The read left me wanting to have a coffee with her and laugh gratefully at the wonder of life.
Way to go Barb and.......you're FUNNY!!
Barb doesn't fail to come through on her promise of being nutty. This delightful book is full of funny stories, adventures and 'happenings' which seem to find her in droves. I literally laughed out loud, snorted and giggled my way through the book. Not only was it funny, it was poignant and uplifting. If you need a pick me up, put the chocolate down and pick up this book!
